A
new study reveals that eating fruits and vegetables
can boost bone health by reducing calcium loss. The
body’s
acid-alkali balance plays a significant role in bone
health. While fruits and vegetables are alkaline
foods, diets high in animal products, soda beverages,
and most junk and processed foods are highly acidifying.
The study, conducted by researchers from Tufts University and Northeastern University, examined 171 men and women aged 50 and above. Researchers split participants into groups, giving them supplements of varying pH levels and subsequently analyzed bone health. Participants who consumed bicarbonate supplements (alkali compounds) experienced significant reductions in calcium loss through the bones.
"When fruits and vegetables are metabolized they add bicarbonate, an alkaline compound, to the body,” says Dr. Dawson-Hughes. “Our study found that bicarbonate had a favorable effect on bone resorption and calcium excretion. This suggests that increasing the alkali content of the diet may attenuate bone loss in healthy older adults.”

On
(or around) March 20th — the first day of spring — caring
people around the world “kick the meat habit” and
explore a plant-based diet in honor of Meatout. Celebrated
annually since 1985, Meatout has drawn supporters
from all 50 U.S. states and two dozen other countries
who spread the message of compassion in their communities.
With a change in U.S. Administration and a new public outlook, it's the perfect time to inspire diet transformation. This year's Meatout slogan is "Change Your Diet - Change The World!"
Inspire change in your community! It’s a great opportunity to:
